While we mention costumes, I think most of people would immediately think about Halloween costumes. However, deciding on a Halloween costume can be a feat within itself. If we have shopped around it becomes clear that though there is actually a wide range of obtainable costumes, we can tell the generic. Here are several ways to take your store-bought Halloween costume and turn it into a thing a little more special that shows your own particular style.
1. Find some spectacular costume jewelry. Rather than purchase the accessories recommended by the designers of your costumes, which are usually sold separately and marked up considerably, find a second-hand store, consignment shop, yard sale, or craft store and buy your own. Add economical charms to a bracelet or necklace that match the theme of your costume. Even cartoonish oversized jewelry from the kiddie section of the store would work well here.
2.Switch out tights and shoes. Keep in mind that the photo on the outside of your store-bought costume is merely a suggestion, and try to swap out the accessories. Find bright colored tights or shoes; just because it’s Halloween doesn’t mean you have to stay with black. A crazy pair of shoes or some day-glow tights will take your costume to another level.
3. Add a cool headpiece. This could be anything from a funky wig to a crazy hat, or even a fancy crown. You will find pieces like these in the accessories section of any Halloween storefront or online shop, but the trick is to make it your own. Hit up a craft store for sequins, beads, feathers, and more. A hot glue gun is easily used to add multi-colored feathers to a top hat or sequins to a bright colored headband. Add some thin braids to a wig, or weave beads into the strands.
4. Craft your own trick or treat bag or Halloween purse. Craft stores will have a variety of ready-to-decorate Halloween bags, as well as sequins, beads, feathers, felt cutouts, patterned fabrics, and more. Or, if you have an old purse you can decorate that, no sewing needed. Again, if you have a glue gun, you are good to go.
Keep in mind, whatever your costume choice, there is always room for your personalized style. Learning how to personalize your store-bought Halloween costume can be simple, fun, and amazingly affordable!
